Borders of Time: Baroque meets contemporary

Two periods of classical music at polar opposite ends, yet unexpectedly bridged across time.

French Baroque music, with its elegant, light miniatures depicting the natural world, finds an echo in the music of Olivier Messiaen, where birdsong, colour, and wonder are transformed into vivid, concentrated works. A similar spirit appears in the music of the Japanese composer Takashi Yoshimatsu, whose luminous writing blends the delicacy of haiku-like songs with rhythms that at times seem to glance back toward the grace and vitality of the Baroque tradition.
During the XX century, Russia turned as well to Baroque but looked instead toward the monumental legacy of Johann Sebastian Bach. His music was revered, and its influence lives on in the works of Dmitri Kabalevsky and Dmitri Shostakovich. Beneath their modern language lies the enduring pulse of Bach’s timeless polyphonic art.
