Despite being written at the prime time of his life, Mahler’s sixth symphony carries with it the foreboding signs of the tragic circumstances that will follow a few years later. The symphony is arguably Mahler’s most daring work for its deliberate defying of resolution, whilst maintaining an overall tonal structure. One perceives through its four movements a restlessness which, if mildly placated in the beautiful Andante, can only find its natural evolution in a number of hammer blows which seem to force the music to contain itself from developing any further.
