VOICE OF THE WHALE

A tribute to the powerful, impersonal forces of nature, George Crumb’s Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale) is an artful depiction of deep-sea whalesong. Inspired by recordings of humpback whales far beyond the twilight zone, Crumb paints a beautiful tapestry of the cosmic beauty of whales and the dehumanized deep sea, both disinterested in the world of humankind. This piece is preceded by Claude Debussy’s sentimental Piano Trio, arranged for flute, cello, and piano. Composed by an eighteen-year-old Debussy, the four-movement Piano Trio is a youthful and naïve early masterpiece.
